I lived in a caravan in Scotland during winter..

I lived in a caravan in Scotland during winter. As the Scots would say, it was fechin Baltic! I was newly married and we decided it was the best thing to do while we found somewhere more permanent to live.

During the summer it was quite pleasant….on the few days it wasn’t pissing with rain. The rest of the days were like water torture. Constant drumming on the roof. Then it got colder. By the time we hit late November, the water in the toilet would be frozen in the morning, creating a lovely warm splash back. I would scurry out of the bed at 5 am to turn all the electric heaters on, you could see your breath with each exhale. Sometimes the valve on the gas cannister would freeze over so we couldn’t light the fire and the lights would all go out. That was fun!

So, why am I telling you this? Even though I know this was a challenging time. When I tell the story I go, woah, that was tough! But was it really? Yes, it was cold (but we were as healthy as we had ever been). Yes, some mornings I didn’t relish jumping out of bed to switch heaters on (but we did at least have heaters – most of the time).

Was it really that bad? Not really.

And that’s the thing with stories, we can make them as dramatic or as mundane as we want to remember them. Would it sound as interesting to anyone listening if I didn’t mention the frozen toilet or the breath in the air?

The stories we tell others, and therefore ourselves, seep into our subconscious and create a feeling. We then relive the stories and the feelings over and over. The more we tell the story, the more we can associate with the feeling. This can be as helpful or unhelpful as the story itself.

I enjoy telling this story. It teaches me about my resilience. I remember when the house is cold, that it is unlikely to get that cold. I also remember how little we managed to live with in those days. Other stories are not so positive. Often, we regurgitate stories to the point where they don’t mimic reality. We expand, contract, add and remove vital parts. Our subconscious pays attention.

How often do you tell stories that are unhelpful to you?

How real are the stories as to what actually happened?

If you struggle with the stories you tell yourself Not good enough, Not confident, Too old, Too young, Not enough money; coaching and NLP can help change that narrative and help you live a Big Life.

If you want to learn more about the stories you are telling yourself and how to move beyond them, Book a free discovery session with me HERE and discovery how we might work together for a brighter future.
