I've had CBT but it didn't work.
I remember, in the midst of depression being sent for CBT as part of the strategy the NHS uses for initial intervention with mental health issues.
I turned up and we talked through some of the techniques and I was given a book to read. I spent 2 weeks staring at this blue book in total panic. At that time, I couldn’t read so much as a magazine article. I felt terrible guilt that I wasn’t able to help myself.
The therapist was lovely and was also at a bit of a loss and frustrated. She knew I needed more, but wasn’t able to provide it. This is one of the reasons I am so passionate about finding the right process for my clients. If I feel you cannot benefit from NLP or coaching, I will be honest.
The reason I have added this particular guide is because I have heard a similar story to mine from many people who have had CBT and who then wonder why NLP would be able to help.
If you have experience of CBT, you may be reluctant to try NLP.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a way of changing behaviour, anxiety and negative thoughts which has a similar outcome to NLP. The difference is, CBT speaks to your logical brain and NLP speaks to your subconscious mind.
It’s not to say it doesn’t work, for some it does. For me, I wasn’t in logical brain mode at the time and my anxiety increased. We had a discussion during my training about the fact that whatever works for us is the method we prefer, and it’s so true. For me it was NLP.
Much as I love NLP, it is rarely something I use on its own (unless someone wants a quick boost for an interview or some phobia work). I find working with clients over several months to remove blocks (using NLP) and then stepping forward with a plan using coaching methods makes the biggest impact. I deal with the whole person, not a single issue.
If you have tried CBT (or wonder what the difference is) and you don’t know if NLP is for you, they work very differently, and I would encourage you to give NLP a try.
The results I have had with my clients using NLP often have them wondering what happened and why, after so many years, they feel different without really realising.
