Is your New Year already going to shit?
Do you feel pressure to be a “New You” in the New Year?
Lots of people hold off setting any goals until January. That’s the time to start being a New You. Who wants to be a new you in December? What’s the point of that? Or March, a quarter of the year has gone already.
January feels like the natural start of something, so it is a good time to reassess.
Then you are stopped in your tracks when January brings you a whole load of shit, out of your control, that start to scupper your plans.
What do you do then?
Goals set under pressure are more likely to fail, so take a breath and step back. If you meditate, do that. If you don’t, perhaps now is a good time to download an easy meditation, go for a walk, talk to a friend.
Goals set with tight deadlines are not always realistic, and therefore likely to fail. Have a look at the external forces interrupting your life and see what is in your control. If it’s the end of tax year and you are an accountant, now may not be the best time to set your goal of more time off work (or perhaps it’s the perfect time).
Goals set because someone else thinks we should, are doomed from the start. Who is this goal for? Are you going to the gym because your partner wants you to lose weight, but you hate the gym? Are you aiming to get into a certain job because your parents think it’s a great idea, but you hate the thought of it? Check out my free worksheets [HERE] to get a clear idea of who your goals are for and why you want them. Or you could ask your subconscious (look out for my YouTube video this week on how to check in with your subconscious mind).
This weekend I had all sorts of great plans for kickstarting my New Year. I had a timetable laid out and a healthy plan for eating. Then life stepped in and, you know those videos where someone is showing off and they have a table full of glasses but of course they can whip out the tablecloth, then the glasses smash all over the floor. That’s how my weekend was. I had to do some hefty parenting and it wasn’t particularly fun. My plan was up in the air and splattered on the floor.
Do I just give up?
In the past I might have. It would probably have put me off my stride for the rest of the month at least. But it hasn’t. I am set with a new plan and a positive mindset for the week ahead.
Being flexible is something I have had to learn. Life doesn’t always go the way we need it to. How can we be flexible to change with the wind (or teenagers) when necessary?
This is where mindset work really steps up.
Creating a strong mindset to help you navigate the challenges is one of the best ways to ensure goal achievement and a happier life.
I find that having a strong network helps me. Knowing people have my back. It’s one of the reasons I set up BigLifeTogether (My members club for people who want more from their lives). So, when the shit hits the fan, you have a community of people there to lift you back onto the horse and keep riding.
Or maybe you know you feel more comfortable doing it on your own (at least until you build confidence to join the rest of us). That’s why I add new videos and guides to the members hub every month to keep you motivated and learn new skills.
This month I will be creating a set of daily morning routine videos that take just a few minutes to do each day but will program you mind and mental state to have the most powerful start to your day.
BigLife Together costs less than a gym membership and works your whole life (not just those abs!) take a look and enjoy a one-month free trial [HERE].
