Making the Impossible Possible.
I wasn’t a church goer, yet there I was, waiting to ring for my first Sunday Service.
I was terrified!
For those of you who know nothing about bell ringing in a church, the bell ringers gather every Sunday morning to ring the congregation in for the start of service. But I didn’t even go to the service!
I had been ringing for a few months because my friend dragged me along. I enjoyed it but ringing outside of practice was something else entirely.
Our church is also not the usual kind where the bells are rung from the top of a tower, tucked away with no one to watch.
No, we were right in the front of the church for all to see!
My heart was pounding.
My hands were clammy.
What if it all went wrong?
We kept it simple, it was fine.
Nothing to worry about after all.
What brought this to my mind?
Last Sunday we were ringing some more advanced methods (for those who have no idea about ringing terminology, the music is called a “Method” and they start simple and become as complicated as you wish to work towards).
The ones we rang this Sunday were a bit more tricky.
It can be quite unusual to get 6 ringers together on a Sunday to ring the more complicated things and, as we worked our way through “Cambridge” and “Norwich”, it reminded me of that first time I rang for a service.
And subsequently, how far I had come.
If you listen to the bells in your local area, you probably have no idea what goes on in our minds as we are pulling on those ropes.
I am sure most of you think we are just randomly pulling at bells and there is no thought to it at all.
But generally, for me, there is a lot of counting, concentrating and watching.
Not a whole lot of space to think about other things.
Why am I telling you about bell ringing?
While I was standing there thinking how far I had come in terms of ringing, I remember how difficult it used to be to just to change the rhythm of my bell. I
t’s now second nature.
I remember one of my teachers saying, “make second”, “make seconds”, “MAKE SECONDS!!!”.
I had no bloody clue what “making seconds” even was!
They had not explained that bit.
It’s very hard to do something when you don’t know what it is.
Now making seconds is something I do with ease.
Then we moved onto the next stage and the next and finally I rang my first quarter peal (45 minutes of continuous ringing).
My hands were covered in blisters, and I had hardly breathed the whole time.
Since that first Quarter Peal, I have now rung 59 (better get another one in to reach 60!) of increasing difficulty and number of bells (we generally start ringing 6 and move up to 8, 10 and 12 – some towers even have 16 but this is very unusual).
I progressed to teaching others to ring, running practices when needed and being an active ringer in several groups.
The point to all of this is, if I had started thinking about ringing difficult methods from the start, it would have been impossible and I would probably have given up, thinking there was no hope.
In all honesty, the thought of ringing some of the methods I do now just didn’t feel like it was even in my list of goals, they weren’t a remote possibility in the start and if I thought they were, it could have been a road of disappointment, overwhelm and feelings of failure.
Do you find there are areas in your life that just feel too much to deal with?
The thought of starting that business, finding a new partner, discovering you can choose to be confident.
Is it all a bit overwhelming?
I felt that way too, so I had coaching.
Goals were broken down into manageable chunks and the first small steps were created.
We moved along bit by bit, dealing with overwhelm and fear.
This is why I do what I do for my own clients.
I have benefitted so much from this process, I want to help others to do the same.
If I had imagined I would be where I am today, a couple of years ago, it would have felt impossible.
Yet here I am with the help of some amazing coaches.
Where does it feel impossible for you to be right now?
Are you going to let the time pass, thinking “if only”?
What do you want to look back on and think “wow, I did that!”.
If you don’t know where to start, give me a bell (groan).
We will work out the first steps to making the seemingly impossible, possible.
Have a Powerful Day!
